Academic Support on the Job

Classroom at the Workplace combines employment with academic learning.  Students recieve paid release time from work to attend class at the work site, during the work day.  They build academic skills in a professional environment as part of a full-time summer job, internalizing the connection between education and a career and motivating them when they return to school.

With Classroom at the Workplace, students do not have to choose between work and getting help with academics.  For students who need a summer job to contribute to their family's income, the program provides the immediate benefit of the paycheck with the longer-term benefits associated with work experience.

  • Classroom at the Workplace provides daily academic support as part of a job -- at the workplace, during the workday -- for students who have yet to pass the MCAS. To date, nine out of 10 students who have participated in this program have passed the MCAS.

  • Through Classroom at the Workplace: College Prep, Boston students with limited financial resources can earn money for their families and college while preparing for the SAT and increasing their competitive edge. Students receive paid release time from work to attend SAT prep classes 90 minutes a day, three days a week over the seven weeks of the summer program as part of their full-time job. On average, students have increased their SAT scores by 77 points.
